The 143rd Session of the "BNUBS Famous Expert Lecture Series" Was Successfully Held

On the afternoon of April 2, 2025, the 143rd session of the "BNUBS Famous Expert Lecture Series" of the Business School of Beijing Normal University was held in Conference Room 1726, Houzhu Building. This lecture invited Professor David Neumark from the University of California, Irvine. The lecture was themed "Help Really Wanted? The Impact of Age Stereotypes in Job Ads on Applications from Older Workers". More than 30 faculty members, master's and doctoral students from the School participated in the lecture, which was hosted by Professor He Haoran from the Department of Economics.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor He Haoran briefly introduced Professor David Neumark to the audience and extended a warm welcome to his arrival. David Neumark is a Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine and the Co - Director of the Center for Population, Inequality, and Policy. During the lecture, Professor David Neumark shared a series of papers on age discrimination in recruitment. He analyzed the relationship between employers' discrimination in experiments and the use of age - stereotypical language in job advertisements, and elaborated on a field experiment to study the impact of age - stereotypical recruitment advertisement language on the job - seeker pool in the context of age discrimination. Professor David Neumark constructed job advertisements using real - world recruitment advertisement language collected from large - scale age - discrimination correspondence studies, and then modified them to randomly include language related to age - discrimination stereotypes. The study found that recruitment advertisement language semantically related to age - discrimination stereotypes, even if not explicitly age - discriminatory, strongly discouraged older job - seekers from applying for jobs.

Professor David Neumark's research sparked great interest among the teachers and students present. Everyone actively engaged in in - depth discussions with the professor around the topic of age discrimination, and the academic atmosphere at the scene was warm. Professor David Neumark carefully replied to the questions from the audience and comprehensively summarized the lecture content.

Finally, the teachers and students expressed their gratitude to Professor David Neumark for his wonderful sharing. Amid warm applause, the 143rd session of the "BNUBS Famous Expert Lecture Series" came to a successful conclusion.
