The research achievement of Professor Liu Lancui and her doctoral student Hou Juanjuan, A Proposed Global Layout of Carbon Capture and Storage in Line with a 2 °C Climate Target , was published online as a research paper in Nature Climate Change, a subsidiary of Nature Publishing Group. In this paper, a global CCUS layout scheme was proposed for the first time in the world to achieve the goal of 2 degrees temperature control. This paper broke through the existing point-to-point source-sink matching model, and put forward a global source-sink optimization matching scheme based on carbon clusters. It was of great significance for the deep coordinated global emission reduction and the realization of carbon neutrality in China by 2060.

The work focused on identifying carbon sources that met CCUS implementation requirements on a global scale, assessing consistent and comparable sequestration potential, overall optimization and planning for large-scale CCUS implementation. Basing on geographic information data, industry data and land use data, the global carbon emission grid database was constructed. It also defined and identified 4220 CCUS carbon clusters, calculated the CO2 sequestration potential of 794 terrestrial basins around the world, and established the global CCUS source-sink matching optimization model (C3IAM/ GCOP) based on carbon clusters. It is found that the global low-cost deployment of CCUS required the participation of 85 countries or regions, and 80% of source-sink matching occurred within an economically reasonable transportation distance of 300 km.

Professor Wei Yiming of Beijing Institute of Technology was the lead author and corresponding author of the paper, Professor Liu Lancui from Beijing Normal University was one of the co-corresponding authors. They also cooperated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Outstanding Youth Fund "Synergistic Effects and Policies of Carbon Emission Reduction and Air Pollution Prevention and Control", led by Professor Liu Lancui, was one of the funded projects.
