Sixth Undergraduate Academic Forum Concluded Successfully

Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sixth Undergraduate Academic Forum was successfully held in the form of online conference, which was divided into three stages, namely, initial evaluation, parallel session and main forum. The purpose of the Undergraduate Academic Forum of BNUBS is to bring academy to students, to help them consolidate the foundation, to broaden their horizon and to help them explore the frontiers, as well as to promote the continuous improvement of undergraduate teaching, training quality and innovation ability, to stimulate the enthusiasm of undergraduate students to study the academic field, to broaden the academic horizon and to form a good atmosphere of study and research.

 

This year's Undergraduate Academic Forum received a total of 62 papers from undergraduate students. A total of 23 papers were selected in the parallel session after the experts’ initial evaluation, and finally 6 papers in the main forum. The Forum awarded 1 first prize, 5 second prizes, and 6 third prizes.

 

Parallel session was held at Tencent Meeting on July 5th. Served as the judges of the parallel session, Assistant Professor Xu Minbo from Department of Economics, Assistant Professor Hu Conghui from Department of Finance, Yu Jiajie from Department of International Economy and Trade, Assistant Professor Li Jiangyu from Department of Marketing and Professor Shen Chang’e from Department of Accounting questioned and commented on the 23 groups for their report. Finally, 6 papers stood out among the candidates and entered the main forum to compete for the title.

 

On July 10th, the main forum was successfully held at the Tencent Meeting. Associate dean Professor Zhang Pingdan, dean of Department of Economics Professor Yang Juan, dean of the Department of Finance Professor Hu Haifeng, dean of the Department of Accounting Assistant Professor Wu Qinhong, Professor Qu Ruxiao from Department of International Economy and Trade, Professor Xing Chunbing from Department of Economics, and Assistant Professor Hu Conghui from Department of Finance attended the main forum.

The main forum was presided by Professor Yang Juan, dean of Department of Economics, who announced the opening of the Forum. First of all, she affirmed the continuous improvement of undergraduate scientific research level from the significance of Undergraduate Academic Forum to the growth of undergraduate students. At the same time, Professor Yang Juan explained the number of papers, related fields and methods and technologies of this Forum, and introduced the experts and judges who attended the main forum. Finally, Professor Yang Juan wishes this year's Undergraduate Academic Forum a complete success.

In the work exhibition session, Jiang Dongming, Deng Bingjie, Deng Haowen, Wu Yuezhi, Wang Zi and Lin Fengyi introduced the topic selection and background of their papers respectively, and systematically explained the research methods, conclusions and significance. Although the presentations were given online, the performance of each group was without compromising on quality and the discussion was excellent. The topics in this main forum were wide, and the research methods used were rich and varied with strong practical and theoretical significance.

In the comment section, Professor Xing Chunbing and Associate Professor Hu Conghui respectively conducted in-depth but detailed analysis of works of each group and pointed out their advantages and disadvantages and directions for improvement. Professor Xing pointed out the common problems in citing references and selecting report contents in academic reports, and then suggested that undergraduate students majoring in Economics should keep their research methods open, do not get locked into technology-oriented mathematical research methods, and fully consider the basic economic logic behind the research problems. Associate Professor Hu also stressed the importance of the economic logic behind the research, and suggested that students should focus on the process of thinking rather than conducting academic research with the goal of publishing papers, as well as paying attention to the structure and details of presentation when reporting the paper.

Then, Professor Hu Haifeng, dean of Department of Finance, summed up the Forum. He began by praising undergraduates for their enthusiasm for academic research and the quality of their papers, which have improved over the years. He then affirmed the important value of academic forums in guiding students to participate in academic research, and also expressed his expectation for new explorations in the form of academic forums in the future. At last, Professor Hu expressed his gratitude to the students and expert and judges who participated in this academic forum. He also wished the Undergraduates Academic Forum to be better and better and to encourage students to embark on a mature academic path.

In the last part of prize-awarding, associate dean Professor Zhang Pingdan announced the winners and take a group photo. The academic group of Jiang Dongming won the first prize, groups of Lin Fengyi, Peng Xufeng, Wu Yuezhi, Deng Haowen and Wang Zi the second prize, the groups of Lu Yunfei, Han Reqi, Xie Chaoran, Hao Chenyu, Bai Yunge, and Xiao Jinlan third prize.

So far, the Sixth Undergraduate Academic Forum of BNUBS was successfully completed. The Academic Forum provides an excellent academic exchange platform for undergraduate students, and plays an important role in inspiring top-notch innovative research talents and promoting the academic level of undergraduate students. In the future, we hope that students will actively participate in the academic forum, keep on moving ahead, strive to bring forth new ideas, and constantly improve the ability of academic research innovation.

 

Finally, we hope the Undergraduate Academic Forum will become better and better, to become an academic banner of the BNUBS leading the upsurge of scientific research and innovation among students!
