The annual competition of BNU student union and graduate student union ended in December. In the spirit of serving students, the two union not only served students’ rights and interests but also held a variety of wonderful activities and won excellent results in the competition in the past year. The former won the first prize in the competition of the student union, and the later won the title of “Excellent Graduate Union”.

1. Student Union

At 20:00 on November 22th, 2019, the 2018-2019 student union evaluation conference of BNU was held in 502 of Classroom 9.

Xi Meifen, president of the student union of our college, attended the meeting. According to the order of drawing lots, she appeared in the 20th for the work report and defense. In the defense, she introduced the idea of “spreading the voice of youth and displaying the talents of youth” of the student union of our college and made a systematic and detailed interpretation in combination with the work of the last academic year.

First of all, starting from the organizational construction, she introduced the achievements of our college in the internal and external liaison: improving the personnel assessment system, adding new regulations such as department reporting and department personnel transfer. Skills training was conducted regularly, and an online column of Economic Skills was added to cover all kinds of competition skills. The third leadership forum and visits to famous enterprises were also held.

As for rights protection and service for students, in the theme of “power and benefits are on your side”, she introduced to us the specific performance of the student union of BNUBS showing meticulous care for students-- carry out online rights and interests column, conduct questionnaire survey from time to time, and share tips to improve students’ awareness of rights and interests in the form of interaction; send the greeting cards of BNUBS on students’ birthday; create the online column of Jingying internship , and build the internship library exclusively for students of BNUBS.

Then with the main line-- innovation activities with characteristics, she introduced to us the special activities established by the student union of our college: the mascot “a glutinous rice”, traditional printed media Fangyuan , our original push service and prints. In addition, as the brand activities, Breaking Boundaries forum, plain people transformation, share future series activities also won the praise of the present judges; simulated stock trading competition and simulated professional recruitment competition were held to build a platform to enhance personal professional ability; in terms of recreational and sports activities, we held activities such as calorie reduction and painted egg at DIY. In terms of activity form, we actively seek cooperation with our brother schools and departments while holding the event independently. Meanwhile, international students and exchange students of Zhuhai Campus were invited to co-organize and share activities.

Finally, she reported to us the achievements made by BNUBS in various activities at the university level in the past year: we ranked fifth on the undergraduates’ group in the sports meeting of BNU; we accouted for four seats in best 11 people in Sun Cup; we successfully defended in Galaxy Cup; we won the first place of the second prize in cheerleading competition; we won the first and third prize in cooking contest; we won the second prize and the best conductor award in 129 chorus competition. The numerous fruits were amazing.

Then came the defense. First, the judges affirmed the richness of our activities. Secondly, it also put forward some problems related to students’ work. The first question-- how BNUBS as a large college can ensure the richness of activities and contents in the face of the trend that student organizations are mostly required to reduce the number of students? She answered that in terms of efficiency, the training of officers should be strengthened to improve their work efficiency; in terms of the organizational construction, the cooperation between departments should be strengthened and there can have appropriate personnel flow which can alleviate the shortage of staff. The second question-- BNUBS is a large college and the scale of the student union is also relatively large. In terms of organizational construction, what do you think are the good aspects and progress in this year? She also explained from the following five aspects: nine departments, clear division of labor, mutual assistance; personnel assessment to promote reasonable competition and progress; work manual to regulate work; regular skill training; communicate with other colleges and universities to learn from each other.

In the end, our college won the first prize in the 2018-2019 student union competition of BNU for its excellent work performance, sufficient material preparation and beautiful performance on the spot.

The achievements of the student union of the School of Economics and Business Administration cannot be separated from the joint efforts of the previous president Mr. Zong Yibo, the presidium, ministers and officers of the student union, as well as the careful guidance of the teachers and the support of all the students of our college. Looking back, we build up small steps; looking to the future, we aim at a thousand miles. In the coming year, I believe that our college will not forget the original intention, forge ahead!

2. Graduate Student Union

At 2:00 p.m. on December 1^st, 2019, the competition of “Excellent Graduate Student Union” of BNU for the 2018-2019 academic year was held as scheduled in classroom 9,502.

Gong Lin, chairperson of the graduate student union, attended the competition on behalf of the graduate student union. According to the drawing lots, she was the 18^th candidate to firstly present her report and then defend her statements.

Gong Lin’s defense was centered with “Cheer Up and Think Big, Success Will Follow Up ”, the philosophy of the Graduate Student Union of BNUBS. She also combined the work achieved in the last academic year and elaborated how to construct the “excellent and qualified” graduate student union from the following three aspects: organizational construction, innovation with its own characteristics and traditions inheritance.

HIGHLIGHTS OF HER REPORT AND DENFENCE

First of all, Gong stated that the construction of any organization requires “Having Overall Consciousness and Developing Its Own Features”. The Graduate Student Union of BNUBS has been actively adjusting and specifying its internal structure from the aspects of work system, annual work book and assembly, and improving the current routine regulations. Then she introduced the organizational structure of the Union, whose goals are to improve the protection of students’ rights, create a diversified union, and provide better services.

Secondly, the characterized innovation should be conducted in a comprehensive way, including academic activities and various sports competitions. She reported the special activities that the Union has held during the last year from the three aspects, i.e., “academic exchange and ideas sharing”, “vocational education to find the direction” and “competing for glory for BNUBS both in academic and sports”. In the academic field, more than ten renowned scholars have given lectures and Stata series lectures have been held to facilitate academic exchange and ideas sharing. Moreover, holding them is also beneficial to achieve the goal of “usefulness of learning and knowledge application”. In terms of career development, employer’s forum, series face-to-face lectures of job-seeking, campus students experiencing business, and Q&A meetings for freshmen were held to help students make better career plans. In students’ daily life, the graduate student union actively held activities closely linked with students’ life, such as the leadership forum cooperatively held with Wuhan University, welcome reception, the fellowship activity between BNU and BUAA (Beihang University), dumpling festival on winter solstice, “Smith Cup” badminton competition, etc. Gong Lin introduced the achievements made by the Union in various activities in BNU. In the postgraduate debate competition, we cooperated with School of Sociology and advanced to the second round. The “Economics-Life Science Student Football League” formed with the Graduate Union of the School of Life Sciences, became the top 8 teams. In the graduate basketball league (women’s basketball), our women’s basketball team cooperated with the School of Law, Department of Physics, and the College of Global Change and Earth System Science and got the second runner-up. At the same time, for the purpose of narrowing the distance between the graduate union and students and in line with the fast development of new media, online news publicity has also been actively promoted, which can be divided into six parts, i.e., “clips of school life”, “focus of students”, “interns”, “all week talk”, “colorful publicity” and “whispering”.

Lastly, traditions should be inherited and guided by advanced ideas. Gong Lin introduced the sharing meetings for new doctoral students, and for student cadres in Zhuhai, and the traditional activities such as welcoming the senior students going back to the main campus. The year of 2019 marked 70^th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and before the National Day of 2019, the Graduate Union of BNUBS played an important role in encouraging graduate students to devote more, nourish overall consciousness. As a result, more than 15% of the total number of graduate students participated in the rehearsal and the grand gathering to celebrate the 70^th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Such a high rate of participance has been highly praised by all.

After the presentation was the defense part. The judges affirmed the diversity of our activities in the first place. After that, a series of questions concerning the student work were raised, i.e., your online news publicity is remarkable, and can you explain the function of the online news publicity section? Facing this questions, Gong Lin remained clever and responded immediately. Her answer was based on the Union own background information. She briefly introduced the division of the online news publicity section, saying “colorful publicity” is mainly responsible for the publicity of the union’s entertainment activities. “Scholars Show” is for the promotion of academic forums, employer’s forums and important conferences. “Clips of school life” is for organizing and promoting the activities of the graduate student union. “Interns” is for providing internships and autumn recruitment information. “Whispering” is for collecting the students’ feedback. The Graduate Student Union of BNUBS will actively promote the protection of students’ rights, improving its construction, and participating in the promotion and organization of the activities of BNU Graduate Student Union. Gong Lin hopes that through her efforts and energy, she could lead the Union to standardize the system construction, focus on both inheriting and innovation, create an open environment for ideas exchange, meet the needs of the vast majority of students, and ultimately realize some qualitative changes.

In the end, outstanding performance on presenting the student work, enough preparation of material and excellent on-the-spot defense matter and the Graduate Student Union of BNUBS won the title of “Excellent Graduate Student Union” for the 2018-2019 academic year by obtaining a high score of 90.16.
