摘要：This paper studies the impact of human capital growth on the transformation of employment exploiting an exogenous surge in the years of schooling among the rural labor force induced by the 1986 Compulsory Education Law (CEL) in China. Using the data from the 2018 wave of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and a cohort differences-in-differences (DID) approach, we find that the CEL significantly increased rural labor forces’ years of schooling by 2.4 years, which leads to a significant increase in their annual wage income, off-farm participation, monthly wage, and weekly working hours. However, rural laborers are usually limited to low-skilled jobs in the non-agricultural sector. Heterogeneous analyses show that rural females experienced a higher increase in education but a lower increase in wage income, monthly wage, and weekly working hours relative to rural males. We provide evidence that the different responses of females and males to human capital growth might be explained by household labor division, gender differences in occupational choices, and social gender norms.

刘承芳博士，北京大学博雅特聘教授、现代农学院副院长，中国农业政策研究中心副主任。国家自然科学基金委“杰出青年”基金项目获得者（2019年）。1998年获中国农业大学经济学学士学位，2001年获中国农业科学院研究生院硕士学位，2008年获美国加州大学（戴维斯）农业与资源经济学博士学位。主要从事农业经济学、发展经济学和应用微观计量经济学研究，重点关注农村人力资本（教育、营养和健康等）与农村转型。主持过国家自然基金委杰出青年基金项目、应急管理项目、国际合作重点项目、面上项目等课题10多项。迄今在Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Labor Economics等国内外知名期刊公开发表论文140余篇。担任世界粮食计划署（WFP）等机构的咨询专家，任美国农业与应用经济学会（AAEA）中国分会主席（2019-2021），China Agricultural Economic Review副主编。
