    Abstract:We explore how perceptions of social norms affect the quality of AI-assisted decision-making by conducting a field experiment. Our experiment randomly varies the provision of AI-assisted information, as well as whether that information is accompanied by social norms reflecting others’ attitudes and behaviors, in the context of real doctors delivering health care services on an online health care platform in China. We also develop a theoretical framework to derive predictions. Our findings reveal that providing AI-assisted information alone has only a limited effect on enhancing the quality of doctors’ health care services. However, combining it with social norms significantly improves the quality of these services, particularly among doctors with higher expertise. These findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms of effective AI-assisted decision-making and provide practical implications for AI-assisted management practices.
