  要(Abstract:What could make executive leaders in small sized enterprises more competent in their positions? How do emotions function in the leadershipprocess? A deep observation of the Chinese reality and conversations witheffective executive leaders in Chinese enterprises are helpful to discoverthe reasons behind their excellence in current China society, which couldbe the impetus for further development of the Chinese economy. Integratingemotion and performance effectiveness, emotional and social competenciesare meaningful for effective leadership research and practice. In thisstudy, I will do Critical Incident Interview to executive leaders insmall-sized private Chinese corporations (with 50-100 employees). Based onthe Critical Incident Interview data, I will do thematic analysis toexplore effective Chinese leaders’ competencies. In correspondence with theresearch questions, the major expected findings include: emotional andsocial competencies of effective Chinese leaders; the difference ofcompetencies explaining leadershipeffectiveness in Chinese and western culture contexts
