【ABSTRACT】Larger cities have more job opportunities and more diversified labor markets. In this paper we provide empirical evidence showing that large cities alleviate the tensions facing married couples who are both seeking employment in the migration process. In particular, we show that the gender gap among married migrants in urban China is significantly smaller in large than in small cities. This positive correlation between city size and women migrants’ relative wages can largely be explained by the number of firms and densities, because of which, married women are more likely to find suitable jobs when they follow their husbands. We do not find supportive evidence for alternative explanations for the correlation between city size and women’s relative wages.
