题目:
Using behavioral insights in the mitigation of climate change: evidence from the lab and the field

摘要:
Mitigating climate change involves a series of complicated endeavors that could be improved with insights from behavioral studies. This talk consists of two research papers that address different aspects of the challenge to mitigate climate change with lab and field experiments. Mitigating global problems such as climate change requires different countries to reach agreement in spite of their different historical contribution and economic status. The first paper studies the role of historical responsibility in the provision of public goods (PG). We find that the subjects have broadly shared fair distribution of contributions among the group members. Subjects with high endowments behave more selfishly than those with low endowments. For those with high endowments, historical responsibility makes them less selfish and more willing to contribute. The second paper is a field study at the Paris COP21 conference. We test how a unique sample of policymakers and negotiators update their beliefs on year 2100 global mean temperature increases in response to a statistical summary of climate models’ forecasts. We randomize the way information we provide across participants using three different formats similar to those used in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports. In spite of having received all available relevant scientific information, policymakers adopt such information very conservatively, assigning it less weight than their own prior beliefs. However, providing individual model estimates in addition to the statistical range is more effective in mitigating such inertia.

主讲人简介:
Ning Liu was born on February 18, 1987 in Beijing, China. He received his PhD in behavioral economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on decision making in interpersonal environments. He is interested in human’s risk preference, time preference, and social preferences. In particular, he studies how human interaction affects these fundamental human preferences. He adopts both theoretical and empirical approaches. His current research also addresses the implicational issues of communicating uncertainty related to climate change. Ning’s research has appeared in leading journals including Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Theory and Decision, Nature Climate Change.
Ning Liu holds a research fellow position in the Center for Research on Energy and Environmental Economics and Policy (Istituto di Economia delle Fonti di Energia, IEFE) at University Luigi Bocconi of Milan.
