Title: Communication and Visibility in Public Goods Provision

Abstract:
We design a laboratory experiment on a virtual world platform to investigate how communication and visibility of other participants affect individual contributions to public goods. We find that while communication helps increase cooperation, visibility does not increase cooperation if participants cannot communicate. In fact, communication and visibility work in a complementary way. Chat content analysis of communication further shows that positive reinforcement and monitoring have a positive impact on cooperation, but uncooperative strategies and dissent have a negative impact. An analysis of participants’ provision location shows a general aversion to being geographically close to others when behaving non-cooperatively.

主讲人简介：
Dr. Xin (Sherry) Li is an Associate Professor of economics and the Director of the Negotiations Center at the University of Texas - Dallas. Her research is primarily experimental and behavioral, in areas of broadly defined public economics, labor economics and development economics. In her research she draws on theories and methods from economics and psychology to study how social identity affects individual decision-making and preferences. She also studies whether and how individuals contribute to support public goods. Her research has been published at top economic journals such as American Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, and Games and Economic Behavior. Her research on social identity has been supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. She is currently an Associate Editor at Economic Inquiry and Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Renmin University of China, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
