GATE
A brief introduction
Established in 1997, GATE (Director : MC Villeval) is a Joint Research Center principally affiliated with the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) and the University of Lyon 2, and with secondary affiliations to the University of Lyon 1, the Ecole Normale Supérieure LSH and the Centre Léon Bérard.
GATE’s activities come under the fields of theoretical and applied economics, using models based on game theory and contract theory in particular. From an empirical point of view, the main research tools are applied econometrics and experimental methods. The institute is renowned for its work in the fields of experimental and behavioral economics and has an Experimental Laboratory, equipped with 30 computers and devices for physiological measures that enable tests on a great variety of experimental games. Its computer scientists have designed a software to program experiments (REGATE) and GATE’s researchers publish in the best-ranked journals of the field (Econometrica, American Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Management Science, etc.).
GATE is the editor of a series of Working Papers and is responsible for three distinct seminars series. It also organizes several events, some of the most recent being the European Congress of the Economic Science Association, the conference of the French Economic Association (AFSE), the 2nd European Workshop in Experimental and Behavioral Economics, the Doctoriales MACROFI (Inter-University Network for Research in Financial Macroeconomics), the Conference on “Economic, Social and Environmental Stakes of Trade Liberalization in North African and Near Eastern Countries”, etc.
GATE develops international research projects in cooperation with more than 20 foreign universities in North America, China and several European countries (University of California at Santa Barbara, Cambridge University, Tilburg University, University of Montréal, Laval University in Québec, Beijing Normal University, Aarhus School of Business, Tucson University …) Exchange programs enable Ph.D. students to spend 6 months abroad as part of their academic training.
