 Ⅲ. Feelings of former participants

Xia Haoyuan, the class of 2018, Business Management

“This program is very cost-effective. Despite the fact that it doesn’t enroll many students, the teachers here are professional and you have a lot of opportunities to communicate with teachers after class. It’s like going to a private university with only the cost of a public university. Compared with the Department of Economics, I think the Department of Applied Economics pays more attention to the combination of theory and practice. The courses include not only theoretical derivation and explanation, but also how to use code or statistical software to realize theoretical model and complete empirical research. Over the past year, I have made great progress in empirical techniques, which is also very helpful for my graduation thesis writing.  The philosophy of "Big Agricultural Economics" upheld by the department also enables me to get in touch with contents in different fields such as agriculture, environment and development, as well as technology-oriented big models such as CGE.  Courses such as machine learning also offer me more options in the future.

Life in Madison is not difficult to adapt to, and the cost of living is relatively low. There are many young people in the city, and the students I meet are all very friendly. You can experience all kinds of sports here, especially snow and ice sports.  The department also often organizes group activities with good atmosphere. On the whole, students are in cooperation on the basis of healthy competition.

All in all, the studying in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at UW-Madison is very good.  Whether you want to continue your academic career, enter the industry, or experience the life of studying abroad, this program between Beijing Normal University and UW-Madison is worth trying.

Zhou Weiyang, the class of 2018, Business Management

"My academic life in Madison is extremely fulfilling. The course arrangement of agricultural applied Economics makes me feel comfortable and fruitful. We don’t have many classes everyday, but the different teaching style of each teacher is refreshing and the efficient learning in class has reduced a lot of burden after class. Sometimes, we may encounter difficulties in dealing with homework, but you will actually learn something once you have devoted yourselves. After class, everyone will form a study group spontaneously to share their ideas and solve problems together. After two semesters, I has not only learned and updated a lot of basic knowledge of economics and laid a good theoretical foundation, but also mastered data analysis software such as Stata, R and Python. Applying what I have learned to practice always makes me feel satisfied and despite the fact that I have to write my graduation thesis at the same time in my spare time, I also get twice the result with half the effort after having a deeper knowledge reserve. Madison is a young, friendly and vibrant place. I have experienced a wonderful life here in just six months, which is totally different from what I expected. Now I am full of confidence and expectation for the future study and life."
