[News] The 14th International Symposium on Accounting Research in China Successfully Held in Beijing Normal University Business School

To enhance the high quality development of accounting research in China, the “14th International Symposium on Accounting Research in China” was held in Beijing Normal University Business School from December the 18th to the 20th of year 2015. This event was hosted by the “China Accounting Review” Council, co-hosted by Beijing Normal University Business School and Shen Zhen GTA Information Technology Co., Ltd. Nearly 400 scholars from over 100 domestic and international universities attended this event. Including: Western Kentucky University of USA, the University of Manchester from UK, the Australian Deakin university, the University of Lyon from France, Agder University from Norway, Nanyang Technological University from Singapore, the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, Fudan University, Beijing Normal University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Chongqing University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Zhongshan University, Nankai University, Harbin Industrial University and Xi’an Jiaotong University.

The Young Scholars’ Forum, Academic Journal Editors’ Forum and PhD Career Fair was held on the afternoon of December the 18th. The Young Scholars’ Forum was hosted by Associate Professor Zhu Song, who is the head of the BNU Business School Accounting Department. The only “Excellent Youth” winner in the accounting area, Prof. Wu Liansheng, who’s also the Associate Dean of Peking University Guanghua Management School gave a speech on “Developing the Quality of Academic Research: some of my personal experiences”. Prof. Zhang Huai from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore presented a speech themed on “Finance and Culture: New Conception on Research in China”. The Academic Journal Editors’ Forum was hosted by BNU Business School Associate Dean Prof. Cui Xuegang. Tang Shouning from “Economic Research”, Jiang Dongsheng from “Management World”, Liu Guoqiang from “Accounting Research”, Cheng Xinsheng from “Nankai Business Review” and Wang Liyan from “China Accounting Review” introduced the values, pursuit, as well as manuscript examining procedures and standards of their journal. They emphasized the positive effects of innovative academic thoughts, standardized manuscript examining procedures and a strong editorial department on high quality articles. The PhD Career Fair was hosted by Prof. Wang Liyan from Peking University. This event attracted over 50 domestic and international business schools and over 150 PhD students, offering rich employment opportunities.

The “14th International Symposium on Accounting Research in China” event formally began on the 19th. The opening ceremony was hosted by BNU Business School Associate Dean Cui Xuegang. BNU Deputy Party Secretary Prof. Liu Li introduced the history, spirt and concept of Beijing Normal University; also emphasizing the important status of the Business School. He highly praised the achievements of BNU Business School in recent years, especially in the area of internationalization. Nan Kai Business School Associate Dean Prof. Liu Zhiyuan then introduced the development history and mission of this event. Dean Lai Desheng ended the opening ceremony by a general introduction on the history, mission, vision as well as values of BNU Business School. He also introduced the EQUIS accreditation process that we have made so far, then welcoming all attending guests and thanked them for their continuing support.

The Keynote Speech was hosted by Prof. Lv Changjiang, who is the Fu Dan University Business School Associate Dean. Prof. Li Chen, the Associate Dean of Hong Kong University Business School gave a speech on “Native Research, Mother Tongue”; and Prof. Li Zhen from the National University of Singapore gave a speech on “Competition and Bank Opacity”. Both speeches were highly praised by attending guests.

The Keynote Speeches

Sub-Forums were held in the following two days. The meeting committee received over 245 articles worldwide, including countries and regions such as USA, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. After a strict review process, 48 articles were presented on the sub-forums. Including three articles from BNU Business School by Zhang Huili, Jiang Jie and Yang Dan. Sub-forum topics included “Accounting Information Quality”, “Capital Market”, “Corporate Governance”, “Enterprise Behavior”, “Audit” and “Executive Incentive”. Four sub-forums were held during each time period, which was twenty in total. The 48 selected articles were presented on the sub-forums, receiving comments from professionals, also arranging discussion sections.

The “China Accounting Review” board meeting was held on the evening of the 19th, selecting five “Excellent Articles” and five “Excellent Article Nominations”. The next institute for holding this event was also selected after presentation and defense, which is Dongbei University of Finance and Economics. The meeting also discussed topics such as development target, meeting innovation, journal innovation and PhD career fair.

“The Change, Time Effect and Value Relevance of Accounting Standards” from BNU Business School Accounting Department Yang Dan; “The Impact of Financial Advisor Reputation on the Market Reactionof Listed Companies’Merge and Acquisition Announcement” from Chen Chao and others of Fu Dan University; “Analysis on the Diversified Payment of the Executive Team” from Xu Yue and others of Zhong Shan University; “The Open of the High-speed Rail, Information flow and Enterprise Innovation” from Hou Qingsong and others of Huazhong University of Science and Technology; also “Compensate Protection, Ultimate Control and Debt Financing Decision” from Liu Xing and others of Chong Qing University.“Excellent Article Nominations” winners come from The University of Huddersfield from USA, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nankai university and Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Prof. Wang Liyan, the Chief Editor of “China Accounting Review” then gave a speech on topics such as problems of Accounting Research in China, its development direction, innovation of “China Accounting Review” as well as this meeting. Prof. Lv Changjiang, the Co-chairman of this meeting concluded this event and highly praised its success. This meeting’s key words “International Standards, China Studies, and Research in China” echoed the epoch subject of current accounting research and disciplinedevelopment. The closing ceremony ended as Prof. Cui Xuegang passed the meeting flag to Associate Professor Liu Yuanyuan from Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, their university will be next year’s host.

During the meeting, BNU Vice President Prof. Chen Guangju met the attending guests and representatives, they visited the campus, history museum and BNU Business School afterwards. This meeting received strong support and assistance from university leaders; accounting department teachers as well as teachers from other BNU Business School departments formed the organizing committee; and students from the “Accounting Association” student committee organized a volunteer team. It is their effort and endeavor which made this event a success. This meeting showed the culture and spirit of Beijing Normal University as well as BNU Business School, also demonstrating the research ability of young scholars from BNU. It is believed that this meeting will contribute to the promotion of discipline construction, encourage peer support, expand society influence and promote the EQUIS accreditation process.
