Title

Dancing With the Stars: How Connecting With External-Team Star Colleagues Sparks Team Members’ Innovation Journey

 

Abstract

This study integrates research on stardom and the social model of creativity and innovation to clarify how the full range of a team member’s social contacts (i.e., linked external-team stars, teammates, and direct leaders) play different roles in his/her innovation journey. Using multitime and multisource data (including 239 members in 43 teams) from a high-technology company, we find that a team member’s linked external-team stars’ brokerage is positively related to his/her self-rated idea generation, and this positive relationship is stronger when the focal member’s within-team idea discussion centrality is lower. However, when using leader-rated idea generation as the dependent variable, the above positive relationship is stronger in the condition of higher levels of within-team idea discussion centrality. In addition, we find evidence supporting a positive interactive effect of a team member’s idea generation and leader-member exchange on his/her implementation of creative ideas. Integrating the above results, we further examined a dual-stage moderated mediation model. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings, the limitations of this study, and future research directions are discussed.

 

Biography

Dr. Kai Zhao is an assistant professor at School of Labor and Human Resources (SLHR), Renmin University of China. He got his PhD degree majoring in management from School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University in 2017. His research activities focus on creativity & innovation, team network, and work-family issues. By now, he has published 5 academic articles in the respectful management journals such as Journal of Organizational Behavior (ABS-4) , Journal of Vocational Behavior (ABS-4) , and The International Journal of Human Resource Management (ABS-3) . He is now responsible for a National Nature Science Foundation of China Project. In 2018, he acted as the first author to win the 9th National “100 Excellent Management Teaching Cases” Award of China. He has also been an active participant in the Academy of Management Meetings and the International Association for Chinese Management Research Conference. Before joining the faculty at SLHR, Dr. Kai Zhao worked in School of Economics and Management, Beihang University for one year.
