【题目】Uncertainty in third-party intervention: a cross-country experimental study

【摘要】

Third-party intervention plays an important role in economic interactions and the evolutionary stability of norms. In an extended trust game with a sender, a receiver, and a third party who takes no direct material interest and can punish or reward the receiver at own cost, we investigate the working mechanism underlying third-party intervention. The results of our cross-country experiment suggest that third-party intervention is “soft” and subject to uncertainty, and, consequently, can be influenced by the expectation of the sender. Furthermore, the receiver is more pro-social – returning more to the sender – when there is higher uncertainty in third-party intervention. Our study provides important insights to the working mechanism underlying third party intervention.

【主讲人简介】

Jianying Qiu is currently an associate Professor at the department of Economics, Radboud University Nijmegen. His main research field lies in individual decision making under risk and uncertainty. He conducts both theoretical and empirical researches. He develops new theories for some important empirical puzzles and uses experimental method to test those theories. He is also interested in the theory of social preferences and norms. His works have been published in leading journals such as Management Science, Games and Economic Behavior, Experimental Economics, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
