讲座摘要:
This paper investigates the reasons why children are left behind when one or both parents migrate. In the 2011 Dynamic Monitoring Survey of Migrant Population in Urban China used here, the proportion of married migrants with children who live all together in the city is 66%, the other third including various family living arrangements. We identify what part of the decision to leave a child behind can be attributed to individual preferences (including those dictated by cultural norms) and what part can be attributed to institutional or local constraints at destination, notably through the household registration system (hukou), to which access to public services in cities is deeply tied. Our analysis shows that migration characteristics and destination matter more than child and parental characteristics, and that schooling constraints are prominent. We find weak evidence of a preference-for-son effect.
