Professor He Liping, expressing his opinions of the Sino-US trade disputes’ impact on ASEAN economies in the afternoon symposium, pointed out that if the Sino-U.S. trade relationship deteriorated, due to China’s key position in the East Asian industrial chain, the ASEAN economies would not have any significant trade diversion effect in the short term, probably suffer major setbacks along with China’s trade. In addition, if major ASEAN economies, having a large trade surplus in the trade with the United States in recent years, turns to an important country of trade deficit with the United States in the future following China, they will also become one of the point aim of US trade policy.

On the morning of April 10, Professor He Liping visited the ASEAN Secretariat with the Asian Studies Institute of CFAU and some scholars. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, the Deputy Secretary-General for Socio-Cultural Affairs of the ASEAN Secretariat and his assistant exchanged views with the delegation on the objectives and process of setting up ASEAN Community.
